Fortran 95 Language Guide

Description

Dan Ch. Christensen: European Historiography of Technology

European Historiography of Technology

Description

This is an anthology about technology's role in the modernisation process. It is written by a European group of historians of technology. Technological modernisation is very much a question of transferring technology from an innovating culture to a culture aspiring to economic growth. But technology is not only a lever of riches. Sometimes it was not even that. Technology in this anthology is not defined as artefacts only, but as skills and culture, too. Technology transfer was, perhaps, the most important agent of modernisation. Consequently, modernisation must be understood as a complex internationalisation of technological competence. Technological artefacts will always be embedded in a cultural environment. During transfer the recipient culture is likely to be upset, because transfer of technology invariably means transfer of cultural values. Sometimes the recipient culture refuses the technology transfer, sometimes it manages to shape the technological artefact according to its own cultural values, but quite often the recipient cultures succumb. The modernisation process can be seen as technology transfer smoothing out divergencies between cultures of European nation states. Or a smelting pot of technological artefacts and skills. This volume is an attempt to study the relationship between technology as artefacts and skills and cultural environments, academies of science, education systems and ethical values in a comparative European perspective. The papers were given at a conference in Roskilde in 1992 attended by some 40 historians of technology from Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.

"It Can t Happen Here" is the only one of Sinclair Lewis s later novels to match the power of "Main Street, " "Babbitt," and "Arrowsmith." A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, it is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler s aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press. Called a message to thinking Americans by the" Springfield Republican" when it was published in 1935, "It Can t Happen Here "is a shockingly prescient novel that remains as fresh and contemporary as today s news. She's shocked that Hank isn't mad. But she's more shocked to learn Hank and Kyle are hometown buddies. But when the men offer to share her-in every way-she knows that she's going to have to choose the Dragon Quest Builders ebook pdf one man who can give her the ride of her life...

Twenty-four hours can change your life ...Allyson and Willem share one magical day together in Paris, before chance rips them apart. We Need to Talk About Kelvin: What Everyday Things Tell Us About the Universe

Description

Look around you. The reflection of your face in a window tells you that the universe is orchestrated by chance. The iron in a spot of blood on your finger tells you that somewhere out in space there is furnace at a temperature of 4.5 billion degrees. Your TV tells you that the universe had a beginning. In fact, your very existence tells you that this may not be the only universe but merely one among infinity of others, stacked like the pages of a never-ending book. Marcus Chown, author of Quantum Theory Cannot Hurt You, What a Wonderful World and The Solar System, takes familiar features of the world we know and shows how they can be used to explain profound truths about the ultimate nature of reality. His new book will change the way you see the universe: with Chown as your guide, cutting-edge science is made clear and meaningful by a falling leaf, or a rose, or a starry night sky...We Need To Talk About Kelvin: What Everyday Things Tell Us About The Universe is a hugely accessible exploration of quantum theory, relativity, cosmology, biology and chemistry. Taking our everyday experiences, Marcus Chown quickly and painlessly explains the ultimate truths of reality.

The places Melanie McGrath describes have largely vanished now. This evocative and deeply moving family memoir recreates the lost East End and the struggles of those who live there. Never. Saving her city and her We Need to Talk About Kelvin: What Everyday Things Tell Us About the Universe download PDF best friend are the least a Girl of Spirit can do yet what Flora doesn t expect are the life-altering revelations she learns about her family and herself." The line that separated Eastern Christendom from Western on the medieval map is similar to the "iron curtain" of recent times. Linguistic barriers, political divisions, and liturgical differences combined to isolate the two cultures from each other. Except for such episodes as the schism between East and West or the Crusades, the development of non-Western Christendom has been largely ignored by church historians. In "The Spirit of Eastern Christendom," Jaroslav Pelikan explains the divisions between Eastern and Western Christendom, and identifies and describes the development of the distinctive forms taken by Christian doctrine in its Greek, Syriac, and early Slavic expression. "It is a pleasure to salute this masterpiece of exposition. . . . The book flows like a great river, slipping easily past landscapes of the utmost diversity-the great Christological controversies of the seventh century, the debate on icons in the eighth and ninth, attitudes to Jews, to Muslims, to the dualistic heresies of the high Middle Ages, to the post-Reformation churches of Western Europe. . . . His book succeeds in being a study of the Eastern Christian religion as a whole."-Peter Brown and Sabine MacCormack, "New York Review of Books" "The second volume of Professor Pelikan's monumental work on The Christian Tradition is the most comprehensive historical treatment of Eastern Christian thought from 600 to 1700, written in recent years. . . . Pelikan's reinterpretation is a major scholarly and ecumenical event."-John Meyendorff "Displays the same mastery of ancient and modern theological literature, the same penetrating analytical clarity and balanced presentation of conflicting contentions, that made its predecessor such an intellectual treat."-"Virgina Quarterly Review "

Brodi Ashton: Everneath

Everneath

Now she s returned to her old life, her family, her boyfriend before she s banished back to the underworld . . . this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.Nikki longs to spend these precious months forgetting the Everneath and trying to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jack, the person most devastated by her disappearance and the one person she loves more than anything. But there s just one problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who enticed her to the Everneath in the first place, has followed Nikki home. Cole wants to take over the throne in the underworld and is convinced Nikki is the key to making it happen. And he ll do whatever it takes to bring her back, this time as his queen. As Nikki s time on the Surface draws to a close and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole s queen.Everneath is a captivating story of love, loss, and immortality from debut author Brodi Ashton."

Originally published in the United States in 1959, The Charioteer is a bold, unapologetic portrayal of male homosexuality during World War II that stands with Gore Vidal s The City and the Pillar and Christopher Isherwood s Berlin Stories as a monumental work in gay literature." My family doesn't do happy endings. We do sad endings or frustrating endings or no endings at all. We are hardwired to expect the next interruption or disappearance or broken promise. Hope Solo is the face of the modern female athlete. She is fearless, outspoken, and the best in the world at what she does: protecting the goal of the U.S. women's soccer team. Her outsized talent has led her to the pinnacle of her sport - the Olympics and the World Cup - and made her into an international celebrity who is just as likely to appear on ABC's Dancing with the Stars as she is on the covers of Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, and Vogue. But her journey - which began in Richland, Washington, where she was raised by her strong-willed mother on the scorched earth of defunct Everneath pdf nuclear testing sites - is similarly haunted by the fallout of her family history. Her father, a philanderer and con man, was convicted of embezzlement when Solo was an infant. She lost touch with him as he drifted out of prison and into homelessness.
